'This brilliant album pays homage to [the waits'] important role in London’s musical life around the turn of the 17th century.'
- Early Music America
Our recording is a celebration of the music of the ‘waits’ – town musicians who were famed in London for their artistry and skill on a par with those at the court. Waits were wind players first and foremost and this concert is a celebration of the broad repertoire waits would have played. The ‘Topping Tooters’ play on cornetts, sackbuts, dulcian, recorders and bagpipes. The recording contains music for ceremony, civic procession, sophisticated masque and theatre pieces as well as popular dance and song for performance in tavern and communal dance hall.
